On April 26, McIvor was in a biking accident that caused a severe C7 spinal cord injury, according to a GoFundMe page started for him.

At his hospital in Georgia, McIvor has fought through tremendous pain, countless treatments, and has maintained the determination to grow stronger each day, a friend wrote on the page.

"We, his friends, family, fellow firefighters, and neighbors are doing all we can to support Jon and his road to recovery, but could use some help to defray some of the medical costs as he works through his journey to walk again.."

McIvor's friends started the fundraising page to give back to someone who has been a civil servant for nearly two decades, they said.

Along with being a devoted husband to Danielle and father to 9-year-old Carys, McIvor spent his career as a firefighter, nationally registered paramedic, instructor, captain and both operational and administrative Battalion Chief, the GoFundMe page detailed.

McIvor even worked as Plans Chief for FEMA Urban Search and Rescue’s Virginia Task Force 2 to provide aid to victims of a major building collapse in Miami, his friends wrote.

Other fire officials, friends, and members of the Virginia Beach community have donated to McIvor's recovery journey.

The GoFundMe page had raised nearly $35,000 of their $50,000 goal as of August 29.
